Reading the Daily Office
One of the joys of the Episcopal tradition is the emphasis that we place on the word of God in our daily life and work.
The Daily Office readings, found in the Book of Common Prayer, are a way for us to enjoy scripture as part of a daily
discipline of spending time with God through prayer and Bible reading. Because the Bible is not a singular book but a
collection of books, one may appreciate the varied types of literature and their meanings more so if they are read as
suggested in the Daily Office rather than attempting to begin with Genesis and end with The Revelation to John.
The Daily Office is also the guide that liturgical leaders use in choosing the readings for the various non-eucharistic
services of the church such as Morning, Noon and Evening prayer. The website,
www.missionstclare.com/english/cal.html,
is updated every day with the Daily Office of the Day.
If you are a beginner, or find that your time is limited, you may wish to begin this prayerful use of scripture by praying
the Psalms listed for that day: morning, noon and evening. This is the church's ancient prayerbook/hymnal that continues
to nourish Jews and Christians alike, as we connect in faith and love with our spiritual ancestors and one another through
our prayer.
May God richly bless you!
