The Pennyworth Shop is a thrift shop which has been successfully managed by members of Grace Church and community volunteers for over 50 years. The shop provides donated clothing and household goods at very affordable prices to persons in our community. The shop is located at 955 Bonifant Street in Silver Spring and relies solely upon the faithful service of volunteers. The income from the Pennyworth Shop has supported a wide variety of ministries thoughout the years and the shop annually pledges 10% of its income to Outreach ministries beyond the parish. The Pennyworth Shop welcomes, and needs, the services of new volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to work at the front counter to sell merchandise Tuesday - Saturday. We work a three-hour shift (10:00 - 1:00 or 1:00 - 4:00). Donations are priced on Monday and Thursday at Grace House from 10:30 - 12:30 and volunteers are needed to transport priced merchandise from Grace House to the shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tuesday through Saturday
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Donations may be dropped off in the narthex or in our bin outside the basement entrance to Grace House, opposite the back left corner of the church parking lot.

We welcome new volunteers!

We always need new volunteers. There are many opportunities to help this important ministry:

Shop workers

Volunteers are needed to work at the shop to sell merchandise Tuesday - Saturday. We work a three-hour shift (10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.). There are no special skills to learn (not even a cash register!) and workers receive a 50% discount on items they purchase at the shop!

Sorting and pricing

Most donations come in to Grace House. Donations are sorted and priced in the basement of Grace House on Monday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. We provide general guidelines and “training” and welcome anyone who can join us for all or part of this time.

Transporting merchandise to the shop

Items must be transported to the shop each Monday and Thursday when pricing is finished – about 12:30 p.m. If you can offer your car and make this short drive on one of these days, that would be much appreciated.

Sorting parties!

Can’t be available during the day? We gather at Grace House on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dessert, fellowship and sorting. It really is fun! If you can’t be there until 8:30 p.m., or have to leave before 9:30 p.m., no problem. Even an hour is a huge help and we’d love to have you. e-Bay sales

Occasionally, we receive donations of unusual or valuable items that we would like to sell on e-Bay. We are looking for someone who can take over e-Bay sales – just a few items per month max.

What can I do to support the Pennyworth Shop?

Every member of Grace Church can participate in this ministry. What can you do?

For 55 years, the Pennyworth Shop has provided an important service to Silver Spring families, contributed to local, national and international social service organizations, and has financed substantial improvements to Grace Church. Every member of Grace Church can participate in this important ministry. What can you do to keep the Pennyworth ministry going?

1. Donate your gently used clothing, household goods, jewelry, books, art and (especially needed for our Christmas sale) toys. Collection bins are in the narthex and at the basement door of Grace House. We’re happy to provide a receipt for tax purposes.
   
    
2. Tell your friends, neighbors and co-workers about Pennyworth. Pick up our brochure on the Information table in the narthex.
   
    
3. Volunteer. Just one 3 hour shift a month makes a big difference. Choose 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call Marilyn Seitz to volunteer.
   
    
4. Can’t volunteer during the day? Come to a sorting party! We gather in the basement of Grace House from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday evening of each month. We enjoy coffee, dessert and fellowship as we sort donations and get them ready for pricing and taking to the shop. It really is fun!
